Day 1
THE COAST OF STORIES
The first day invites you to disconnect in untouched nature, where coastal pine forests turn golden in the autumn sun and local fishing towns offer warm cultural encounters.
Migratory Birds & Storm Watching in Mērsrags
Discover the unique landscape where the sea blends into the coastal meadows. In autumn, Mērsrags becomes a world-class hotspot for nature enthusiasts. Its sweeping coastal meadows and shallow waters serve as a crucial staging ground for thousands of migratory birds—including massive flocks of geese, swans, and ducks gathering before their long flight south. Stop by the historic Mērsrags Lighthouse or climb the local bird-watching tower: the crisp autumn winds combined with the mystical chorus of calling birds offer a deeply moving experience of nature’s raw power.
Ice Age Mysteries & Stony Charm in Kaltene
Continuing your road trip along the coast, pull over in Kaltene to witness a completely different, rugged, and magnetic landscape. This village draws autumn travelers with two unique geological wonders: the Kaltene Stony Beach, where massive Ice Age glacial boulders take the brunt of roaring autumn waves, and the legendary Kalvas hidden in the forest. A walk along the Kaltene Kalvas nature trail is exceptionally magical during the fall—as golden leaves cascade around you, these prehistoric, moss-covered stone ridges stretching through the trees feel shrouded in ancient mystery.
Roja Marine Fisheries Museum
Head inside to the warmth to explore the heart of the North Kurzeme coast. The museum offers an engaging look into the region’s rich fishing history, ancient shipbuilding, and the captivating life stories of local fishermen, helping you truly understand the rugged charm of this coastline.
Cultural Events & Autumn Flavors of Roja
Settle into the cozy seaside town of Roja. Roja does not hibernate in autumn! The local cultural center and creative spaces regularly host autumn concerts, theater plays, and exhibitions. Enjoy dinner at a local tavern, sampling comforting, hot seafood dishes and catching a dramatic autumn sunset from the Roja port pier.
Day 2
INTO THE WILD
Pūrciema White Dune (Baltā kāpa)
Enjoy a crisp walk along the wooden boardwalk running alongside the old Roja River. Here, framed by the fiery colors of autumn foliage, rises the spectacular, 20-meter-high White Dune, an ancient geological formation dating back thousands of years.
The Melnsils River (Dižupe) Walk – The "Beautiful Views Agency"
A true off-season secret!
Taking a hike from the Melnsils River bridge all the way down to its mouth where it meets the sea is exceptionally beautiful in autumn. Known locally as the “Beautiful Views Agency,” the contrast of the dark, winding river, the golden canopy of trees, and the sudden opening into the vast sea creates a deeply moving, meditative experience.
Ēvažu Steep Coast – A Dramatic View from Above
Driving along the P131 highway towards Kolka, pull over right at the border of Slītere National Park. A short, peaceful walk through a coastal pine forest carpeted with autumn pine needles leads directly to the highest steep coast of the Gulf of Riga (up to 15 meters high). The wooden viewing platform offers sweeping, panoramic views across the moody autumn sea.
Cape Kolka – A Powerful Autumn Phenomenon
Day 3
WHERE THE STORM FADES
Mushroom Foraging in the Pine Forests of Kurzeme
Mazirbe & The Livonian Coast Heritage
Head over to Mazirbe, the cultural heart of the indigenous Livonian people. Explore the peaceful village and visit the Livonian Community House. Take a walk down to the misty shore or seek out the Mazirbe Boat Graveyard tucked away in the pine dunes, where the skeletons of old wooden fishing boats slowly fusing with autumn nature look exceptionally photogenic.
The Absolute Silence of Sīkrags Village
Conclude your Livonian coast Latvia road trip in the historic village of Sīkrags—one of the oldest Livonian fishing villages and a protected urban monument of national importance. Complete, unblemished peace reigns here in late autumn. Take a quiet walk through the village down to the wide, empty beach, listening only to the rhythmic roar of the breaking waves and the wind in the pines before your journey home.
